For those of us who are into guns and haven't been living under a rock for the last 3 or so decades, the Glock name has become a household name in the shooting world. People who have never handled a gun (let alone handled a gun) recognize the name. It is estimated that 65% of US police agencies use some form of Glock or another. It's time to take an in-depth look at everything you need to know about the Glock 9mm and its various models. We will see:
Glock Generations Explained
The story of the Glock is quite remarkable, since the man who installed the gun knew next to nothing about pistol design. Gaston Glock sold screen sticks and knives to the Austrian army, and was known for cutting needles. His team developed the Model 17 pistol to help Austrian soldiers in need of a new sidearm, and the story of the raid was born. Interestingly, the "17" signifies the 17th patent issued to the famous corporation, and these numbering patterns continue to this day.

Shooters tend to be either glock fans or detractors - not a lot of crap out there. I am one of those rare birds who are in the middle with my opinion of Gaston's underground. I've had a model 30 .45 ACP for a long time and later bought a barrel for it so I could shoot my hands. He did well without showing off too much. Gun's eye was not small. And, of the more than fifty pistol models that Glock sells, the best selling model is the 19 in 9mm. This compact pistol packs 15+ 1 rounds into a compact package. I know many people who carry this model, it seems to strike a middle ground between concealable size and capacity. I've put together a chart comparing the dimensions of popular models as well as an extended version with all twenty compared, for all shooters are listed in detail there. In fact, some of these models are extremely rare in gun shops that serve a very specific purpose (for example, long-range competition, which is what the Model 34 specializes in). So before we note all the numbers on the cards, let's take a closer look at the Glock 9mms.

Now let's look at each example, but first we need to explain a little. If you look at the table above, you will see MOS and FS listed after some models. MOS stands for Modular Optical System. Glock changed the frame on these guns, the front sight of the rear end to accept a red dot or mounting plate. This fills in when not in use.
FS means the gun includes a front sight (slide). Those FS-branded pistols have serrations at the front of the slide to aid in slide control, and standard serrations at the rear. Many shooters have asked Glock to include front sights on all of their newer guns. So far only those guns have been used which are labeled FS.

A generational Glock explanation is in order if we want to keep this article as useful as possible for those of you who are considering purchasing a Glock. "Generation" in Glock terminology is similar to other companies coming out with "Mod 2", "2.0" etc. It determines the major modification of the features in their guns. Feature changes (commonly called upgrades) can be several minor ones, a few significant "major" changes, or a combination of both to qualify for the next generation. Here we go, from the original Glock (now Gen1) through the latest generation as of this writing, Gen5.
This is an original, bare-bones example of a Glock 17. We can identify this gun by the lack of stitching or writing on the body and no finger grooves. This is the Glock that placed the first order of 25,000 pistols with the Austrian military in 1983. Here is a unique ring: In addition to the Model 17 pistols sold to the military were the Model 18s - the 17s model with an optional trigger. ignites the power between 1100-1300 RPM. Glock has also released an improved version of this gun (model 18C). This was technically a pistol and therefore subject to the regulations and taxes imposed on gun ownership as people who tried to buy it were caught.
The Model 22 RTF2 (.40 S&W) was given a rough, textured finish with a gilded slide and a new checkering around the grip in 2009. Other models that got the RTF2 treatment include the 31, 32, 23, 21 and 19 although not all were gold plated.
Starting with the model 17, we see a full-size board with a longer barrel than the smaller models. This gun is the first Glock to be shipped. This is mainly due to the adoption by the Austrian army and some police units from 1982. I remember when the gun came out the first "plastic pistol" around the world (H&K VP70 technically the first polymer pistol, introduced in 1970. German. market).
What's The Difference Between Glock Pistols?
All gunsmiths worked to ensure that this "plastic gun" could not be seen by an airport metal detector, and some in the shooting community thought the gun would fail because of concerns they had about the reliability of the gun's mechanism. and there was nothing to worry about - it didn't happen. But the reliability and innovation of the pistol made it popular not only with military and police standards, but also with civilians. The gun has, on average, only 35 parts... talk about convenience! My brother has a Gen 4 Model 17 that he loves. I gave a joke and printed it. Because of the size, the 17 concealed carry is not designed. It is most at home in the holster of a level 3 police officer, or in a military craft in the military leg of SOE.
Model 17 comes in the Genesis 3, 4 and 5 versions: so if you want a striped finger (or not), you're in luck - just buy the generation you want. Don't need a combat gun? Take a Gen4 or Gen5 MOS and put a red dot on it. Want an all-around shooter? Get the Gen3 and save money (if you can still get it). Model 17, as mentioned above, started it all.
Ok... now let's look at the 9mm diameter. Since they make Glock's best sellers, the Model 19 has its share of enthusiast users. Also, let's not forget the aftermarket parts industry. The Model 19 probably has more third-party parts available than any other Glock. That said, the Model 19 is perfect for IWB- or OWB concealed carry with a 4-inch barrel, narrow quarter-inch width, and 15-round magazine. As I wrote before, this pistol is the benchmark against which compact 9mms are judged.
I know several people who wear the model 19 and love it. It's no coincidence that Glock wanted to release the model 17 and 19 first in their Gen5 configuration. The 17, with its legal following, and the Model 19, became the best selling Glock.

The Gen5 19 model is generally accepted. The only complaint I've heard about the Gen5 model 19 has to do with the front lower limb. Some shooters say they hurt their hands, as mentioned, where the heel of the hand and palm meet in the frame. They say sharp edges are the culprit. This does not seem to be the case with the Model 17 due to the long grip of the body. Fortunately, this problem is also addressed in the new model 45 (below).
